Barry Wark architect hammersmith grotto
Hammersmith Highline

It is curious to consider that some of the greenest urban spaces are to be found along our railway infrastructure. Left untouched and with the right material conditions, nature will colonise many manmade structures by itself.

In no structure is this more celebrated than in the grotto where nature, architectural form and sensory experience merge into one.

The proposal creates a series of pockets along a promenade with food and drinks kiosks. It rejects the extraordinary maintenance costs associated with manicured planted spaces and instead opts for an immersive, atmospheric experience where urban wilderness continues to thrive and be enjoyed.
